Autism Awareness Week: People with Autism and Emotions

April 04, 2016

In recognition of Autism Awareness Week, each day we will be answering some common questions about Autism to support and raise awareness.

A common misconception is that people with autism don’t feel emotions. This is far from the truth; autism does not stop an individual feeling emotions, happy or sad, but people with autism can sometimes find it difficult to express their emotions. Alternatively, people with autism sometimes communicate their feelings in a way that is different to those around them.

A contributing factor to the myth is that some people with autism, not only challenged with the struggle to share how they are feeling, can also feel afraid to express their emotions.

If we take into consideration the fact that people with autism also struggle to understand the emotions expressed by those around them, it is entirely understandable why some people with autism can feel isolated and suffer with anxiety.

This is just one reason why here at Mentaur we are committed to treating those in our care with dignity and respect to empower people to more independent living.
