Autism Awareness Week: What effect does autism have?

April 07, 2016

Autism can have a profound effect on both the individual with the condition and their relatives. With approximately 1 in 100 people in the UK diagnosed with autism, it is important that people are aware of the effects of autism.

Autism is a lifelong condition and without the right support it can sometimes have devastating effects on the individual with autism and their families, with communication and perception between those with the condition and their relatives sometimes being different and very difficult.

Autism is sometimes described as a hidden disability, as it is not always clear if someone is living with autism or not. This, along with the challenges identified as part of the condition, can make social communication and interaction even more difficult.

According to recent statistics, approximately only 15% of adults with autism are in full time paid employment. With the right support, more adults with autism could find work and live more independently.

These are just a few ways in which autism can affect people with the condition throughout their lives. Here at Mentaur we are dedicated to spreading awareness of the effects of autism and supporting those in our care to a life less affected by their condition.
